Pioneering projects

Bobsleigh

With the cold weather approaching, we decided to have indoor winter sports evening. We played hockey, curling with giant ice cubes frozen in ice cream tubs and bob sleighing. The bob sleighs we made are very simple and similar to the Flintstone cars, but without wheels.

Equipment required

- 5 x 1.8m (6ft) staves
- 6 x 0.9m (3ft) staves
- 18 light sisal lashings
- 2 long lengths of sisal
- parcel tape
- odd bits of carpet

Method

The design for the sleigh should be clear from the diagram. Three 1.8m (6ft) staves act as runners and are joined by 2 x 0.9 (3ft) staves at either end. 4 more 0.9m (3ft) staves are lashed across the centre close together to form a seat. Finally the last two 1.8m (6ft) staves are lashed on top of the 0.9m (3ft) staves, along the length of the sleigh to form hand rails.

Off cuts of carpet need to be fixed to the underside of the runner to aid sliding.

A long length of sisal should be tied to each end of the sleigh so that each member of the Patrol can be dragged the length of the hall in a relay race.
