Equipment

- 5 x staves 1.8m long
- 1 x 0.5m steel tube (metal gas pipe is ideal)
- 1 x wheel to fit on tube
- 9 x light cords about 2m long

Method

Make the trestle as follows . . .
Fit the wheel on the metal tube and, using a square lashing, lash two of the staves to the tube, either side of the wheel. They should be close to the wheel but not touching it as it must be free to move easily, and the short end of the stave should not extend past the wheel. (a)

Open out the ends of the staves and lash a third one under these two to form a handle. (b)

To strengthen the chariot, lash the two remaining staves across the frame using square lashings. Then lash their centres together using a diagonal lashing. (c)

To use: the rider sits on the cross members with his feet on the outside of the axle. Two Scouts support the handle and push!

Try using wooden cable drums for the wheel.
