Pioneering projects

Rickshaw

Equipment

- 2 x large cable drums
- 2.x 3m (10ft) light spars
- 1 x 2m (6ft) metal pipe or heavy duty spar to fit through drums
- 2 x 2m (6ft) light spars
- 8 x 1.2m (4ft) light spars
- 12 x 1m (3ft) light spars
- 42 light lashings

Method

Put the metal pipe or heavy duty spar through the cable drums and lash one of the 3m (10ft) spars to either end to hold the drums (wheels) on the axle.

Join the other ends of the 3m (10ft) spars with one of the 2m (6ft) spars.

Lash the other 2m (6ft) spar between the 3m (10ft) spars about 1.2m (4ft) from the axle (sparA).

Push the cable drums towards the outsides of the axle and lash 2 x 1.2m (4ft) spars vertically to the axle. They should be close enough to the cable drums to keep them in place but not so close that they prevent the wheels running smoothly.

Put in two supports for these vertical spars so that they are lashed to sparA and to the centre of the vertical spars.

Lash 2 x 1.2m (4ft) spars between the verticals to form the back of the seat of the rickshaw and lash a further 1.2m (4ft) spar across the supports for the verticals, to form the front of the seat.

The last 1.2m (4ft) spar is used to brace the back of the seat to keep it upright.

Finally lash the 1m (3ft) spars in place to form a seat.
