Pioneering projects

The Tibetan Cage

Equipment

- 2 x 2.5m (8ft) spars
- 8 x 1.0m (3ft 3in) stave
- 4 x 1.8m (6ft) staves
- sisal or light cord

Method

Lash 2 x 1.0m staves to the underside of either end of the 2.5m spars using square lashings.

The 4 x 1.8m staves are tied together using a variation of the figure of eight lashing and the bottoms of the spars opened out to form a pyramid. The four legs of the pyramid are then square lashed to the long spars.

The remaining one metre spars are lashed to the top of the long spars to make a base for the pyramid.

The final touch is to lace across the sides and back of the pyramid to create a decorative effect and the cage is ready to transport a willing volunteer.
