The High Hoist

This is a simple but useful project using very large scale pioneering equipment.

Equipment

If you are unable to obtain spars of the required length, the hoist can still be built using shorter spars joined by sheer lashings.

- 2 x 8m (25ft) spars
- 1 x 10m (30ft) spar
- 1 x 3m (10ft) spar
- 1 x 1.8m (6ft) spar
- 1 x 16mm x 50m (150ft) rope
- 2 pickets
- wooden plank for seat with a hole drilled in each corner
- 2 double pulleys
- lashing lengths

Method

Lash the 2 x 8m (25ft) spars together using a sheer lashing approx 600mm (2ft) from the top of the spars.

Open the sheer legs and lash the 3m (10ft) spar between them approx 1 m up from the butt end to create an A frame.

Lash the 1.8m (6ft) spar across the legs halfway between the 3m (10ft) spar and the sheer lashing.

Bind one double pulley approx 1m (3ft) from the butt end of the 10m (30ft) spar and the other one close to the other end of the same spar.

Thread the 50m (150ft) rope through the pulleys using all four wheels so that when finished, if you pull one end the other moves. (a)

Pull a lashing length through each hole in the seat and tie off with a figure of eight knot some distance from the end of the rope. Tie the ends off under the seat by joining them with reef knots .

Using a bowline, make a small loop in the end of the 50m rope at the top end of the spar, then attach the four ropes from the seat to the loop using round turns and two half hitches. Ensure that the seat hangs level and the height between the seat and the bowline is approx 1.5m (5ft). (b)

The top of the 10m (30ft) spar must be lashed to the top of the A frame, above the lashing. This is probably best achieved by laying the A frame on its side. It is essential that the pulley at the top of the 10m (30ft) spar is above the crutch of the A frame and clear of it.

Stand it up! The A frame should lean back toward the 10m (30ft) spar slightly for stability.

Position the structure then stabilise it by driving in pickets and lashing the butt end of the 10m (30ft) spar to them.
