Greasy Pole

Another simple but fun construction. For safetys sake you may wish to put some crash mats or cushions underneath, or you could just construct it on soft ground!

Equipment

  • 16 x 2m (6 ft) spars
  • 1 x 5m (16 ft) strong spar
  • 18 x 8m lashing lengths
  • 2 x 16m lashing lengths

Method

Using a figure of eight lashing and one of the long lashing lengths, tie four of the 2m spars together about half a metre down from the top.

Spread the legs out and lash a further 4 x 2m spars to hold them in position.

Prepare a second, similar pyramid.

Place the pyramids so that their apexes are about 4m apart and lay the 5m spar onto the apex of each one.

Tie across the tops of the spars forming the pyramid to prevent the 5m spar coming off – do not lash the spar to the pyramids as this will prevent it rolling.

Scouts sit astride the long spar and beat each other with cushions until one falls off! Experiment with sacking etc between the spar and the supports to prevent rubbing but aid rolling.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
